Running On Fumes
Zechariah 4:6, 1 Corinthians 19-20
Getting gas annoys me. It takes too much of my time and I don’t like doing it. So oftentimes I find myself running on fumes and then praying that I make it to the next gas station when I have pushed my car to the limits. I know its bad but refilling my tank is something I try to avoid until I’m desperate.
I believe that a lot of Christians live their Christian lives like this. We live on the fumes – often at most only Sunday church attendance – and only seek Him out and get our refill when we are desperate, instead of being filled by Him daily. In Joel 4:6 God’s Holy Temple is being rebuilt but God gives specific instructions that it will not be built or sustained by might nor by the strength of man but by His Spirit. Since now we are the Temple of the Holy Spirit it is the same for us; we were not built, neither will we be sustained by any human power or strength, any wealth or virtue, or our jobs, spouses, or children, but only by the Spirit of God. I could allow my car to run on fumes and then try to fill it up with water but then I would really be in trouble because it is designed to have gas. We have to be sustained by the Holy Spirit because we are designed that way.Take the time to discover more about Him and the power we have because we are His temple. Praying and spending time with Him and inviting Him into our daily lives sustains us, refills us, and helps us to live a life of purpose and fulfillment.
