Be an Ambassador

2nd Corinthians 5:18-21

18 And all of this is a gift from God, who brought us back to himself through Christ. And God has given us this task of reconciling people to him. 19 For God was in Christ, reconciling the world to him, no longer counting people’s sins against them. And he gave us this wonderful message of reconciliation. 20 So we are Christ’s ambassadors; God is making his appeal through us. We speak for Christ when we plead, “Come back to God!” 21 For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin,[e] so that we could be made right with God through Christ.

As I reflect on my journey with God I can see that I spent many years of my life wasting away opportunity. Lost Opportunities for myself to grow closer to God and just as importantly wasting the opportunity to be that ambassador for Him. The times when I would be with my friends in a bar talking to them about God as I drank Jack and Coke, or participating in Godless conversations over dinners. I see now that in these times I was not bringing them any opportunity to have reconciliation with Christ, more so I was taking them further and further away from Him. So much of it was for myself, to make me look good and sound good, like I had it all together. But the truth is that I did not even know why I called myself a Christian because I was not ministering to anyone.

I started a new life with God when I realized that I needed to have a relationship, a personal relationship with God. Only then did I begin to understand what it meant to be an ambassador for Him. No longer was my faith about me, and how well I was living it out at certain moments of my life. My conversations in life changed. I started to talk with my friends in different surroundings and in different ways. I spoke with conviction, no longer passively. God was starting to use me to make his appeal to the lost. In the Christian walk there are many ways to minister because there are many people who have such different and extraordinary gifts that speak to different areas of ministry, but the one ministry we all should have in common is the one where our goal is to reach the lost. That is why he sent His Son, so that none shall perish. We get to be a part of other people’s new beginning with Christ. There is nothing we should desire more, take more pride in, than being commissioned by God to lead others back to him.

  1. The difference between being used to reconcile people with God and separating people from God is life and death. I was one to cause separation as a result of the example that I set before I was a believer. I didn’t know the harm that I was doing at the moment but it was significant; but what’s crazy, and at times overwhelming, is the fact that causing separation as a believer is far more harmful. For others to see someone who claims to be a Christian, carry him or herself in a very worldly manner, will only provide a misconception of Gods character. We really need to be aware of this as we accept the responsibility that is following Christ.

  2. We are all ambassadors of Christ. I like this devotional. It’s important to understand how being ambassadors isn’t limited to elders or people of the temple. It wasn’t written that way. Because we all have the same salvation and carry the same gift of the Holy Spirit, we are all called to be ambassadors. What makes this so great is that you don’t have to do this as a part time job. You don’t have to stress about clocking into church and doing this for a couple of hours and clocking out. This is a relatively simple full time job. The great part about this is that as Christ followers, we all live lives. Different geographic areas, profession, and extra curricular activities. This means everyone has the potential to receive what we have received! Salvation and the good news that is the Gospel!

  3. So when I read this, one thing sticks out the most. GOD MADE CHRIST WHO NEVER SINNED! Yes, I’ve known that Jesus has never sinned, but hearing it over and over is just crazy. He had a human nature; he was 100% human! What in the world?! We talk about how we can’t help but to sin (which isn’t the case all of the time, but it happens at some point in out lives). Anyway, he already took care of our sins, we have the bible to help guide us, yet we still sin a ridiculous amout. But Jesus.. Jesus never sinned.. Wow..

  4. By claiming the title “Christian” or “Jesus Follower” or whatever you fancy, we take on a huge responsibility. Our choices and actions go from being anonymous to put under a spotlight. Unfortunately people will analyze every choice we make and judge whether or not it’s “the good Christian thing to do” simply because we associate ourselves with Jesus.

Praise God for giving us grace when we mess up. But people are not so grace-filled. And the reality is, the first impression of Christ people get are from His followers. So that should convict and motivate us to love more generously, speak more kindly, make wiser choices, and live more like Christ every day. But it’s not by our own strength. God doesn’t depend on us to make Him look better. He’s been dealing with critics since forever. We depend on Him to make us great!
