Refill Devotional, Week 7 Day 3: “Friendships”

Friendships

1 Samuel 18:1 “As soon as he had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.”

The friendship between David and Jonathan inspires me. Jonathan showed loyalty, kindness, and selflessness toward David on many occasions as King Saul sought to kill David. Early on in meeting David, Jonathan knew that his friendship with David was a valuable one and one that was worth investing in.

God gave us this beautiful picture of friendship from His word for a reason. Throughout the scriptures he gives us blueprints to follow. When we are children, making friends is effortless. As we enter into different seasons of life such as marriage and parenting, it takes more effort to maintain those friendships God has placed in our lives. However, if you know who those valuable friends are that God has placed in your life, you will make the time and the effort. It won’t be out of obligation but because that friendship will bring encouragement, refreshment and wisdom. Just as Jonathan’s soul was knit to David’s, God wants to bring trustworthy friendships into our lives to whom we can knit ourselves.

Can you identify the life-giving friendships God has placed around you? Are you taking time out to cultivate those friendships and find refreshment?
