Refill Devotional, Week 6 Day 1: “Giving Attitude”

Giving Attitude

Colossians 3:1-2

The first step of giving doesn’t begin at the swipe of a pen while signing a check or as you tie up your shoes to volunteer on a Saturday. It begins much earlier and reaches much deeper. In order for us to give in the fashion God desires us to we have to involve our heart and mind. It is often said on a Sunday morning that everything we have is God’s and it couldn’t be more true! Sometimes we get it backwards and upside down thinking that we owe God something when in reality we owe Him everything.

One of my favorite depictions of this is found in Luke 21:1-4. Jesus wasn’t concerned about the amount she had given. It didn’t matter to Him that the rich had given more in a tangible sense. He saw the woman’s heart and knew that her giving was out of a sacrificial reverence not to be seen as the most holy or important.

Often times we can get caught up in our culture’s attitude of “more is more” and think that is the most important goal to set our eyes on. When we are saved, truly saved, our whole perspective changes and we realize that everything from our greatest possession to our smallest nicknack is God’s and we can begin to understand the purpose our giving us meant to have.

In every area of our lives God is calling us to give. He is broadening our view and helping us to see that our time, resources, talents, relationships, and future can have an eternal impact for His Kingdom. He has invited us to play an active role in reaching people and it all begins with setting our eyes on Him. As we seek Him he will fill us so we are never giving out of an empty cup.
