On wings like eagles
Naomi Brinkman
Isa. 40: 31b Amplified Version. “Those who wait for the Lord – who expect, look for and hope in Him – …shall lift their wings and mount up (close to God) as eagles (mount up to the sun.)”
Spending time in God’s presence is what renews us. Wings in Scripture represent power. Besides being majestic, the eagle is one of the strongest birds. This verse is saying that just as the eagle lifts its wings and flies through the heavens, we have the ability and power to come into God’s presence.
The eagle is subject to the law of gravity. If an eagle draws in his wings while flying in the air, he will fall to the ground. When he stretches his wings the force of the air over his wings will lift him up. If we do not exercise the power that we have¸ we will become subject to the things of this earth that draw us down. But we only need to reach out in faith to God and we can begin to soar.
As an eagle flies higher toward the sun, his range of vision gets broader. Instead of focusing on one tiny area, he can see a large range of area. This aids the eagle in finding the food that he needs for nourishment. As we soar close to God, we are raised above the cares of the earth and we can gain understanding of God’s will. His word is our spiritual food and we need it for our spiritual nourishment.
At lower elevations the eagle is often harassed by suspicious crows, disgruntled hawks and other smaller birds. As the eagle soars higher, he leaves behind these distractions. As we soar higher and higher with the Lord, we too can leave behind things that distract us.
