Carols Devotional: “What Child Is This, Part 1”

Isaiah 9:1-7

What Child Is This?

This is a legitimate question to ask about Jesus.  No other child born has had so many prophecies fulfilled at his birth.  As you read through the Gospels, especially the book of Matthew, over and over you will see “Then what was said through the prophet…….was fulfilled.”  Hundreds of prophecies were fulfilled at Jesus’ birth and throughout his short life.

One well-known prophecy is Isaiah 9:7.   “For unto us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders.  And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”  He was born as a human child, but was given to us as the divine Son of God.  What other child has been born for the benefit of all sinners from the beginning of time to the end of the world?  He is called Wonderful Counselor for no other gives counsel with such love and insight with the knowledge of eternity; Mighty God because he is both God and man and as such reconciles us to God.  No less power than that of the mighty God can bring that to pass.  What other child has been called “Everlasting Father” at his birth? He is everlasting because he was with God, the Father, in eternity before coming to us in the form of a baby.  John 1:1.  He conquered death to become the first fruits of eternal life.  He is the Prince of Peace because he is the Giver of peace in the heart and conscience of all who believe in him and receive him.

To answer the question, “What Child is this?”  He is none other than King of Kings and Lord of Lords.  Revelation 19:16.

  1. Thank you for sharing this Naomi. I’m reminded of what an amazing God we have. So powerful he can do anything, yet so loving and gracious and humble and just that he came to walk n live among us, and gave his life to save us. The more i learn about him, the more i want to know him, and the more i find myself loving him right back.
