Carols Devotional: “Oh Holy Night, Part 6”

Give it everything you’ve got

Psalm 40:1-3 (NIV)

“Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we,
Let all within us praise His holy name;
Christ is the Lord,
Oh, praise His name forever!
His pow’r and glory evermore proclaim!
His pow’r and glory evermore proclaim!”

While facing the greatest hardship I have experienced, the Lord gave me the 40th chapter in Psalms. I felt that I was in such a lowly place and incredibly heavy hearted. I waited for Him to intervene and make life better in an instantaneous sort of way. As you may have guessed, He didn’t fix it in that fashion. Instead I had to put one foot in front of the other and walk through the pain and toward the healing.

Although that was 8 years ago, there are still very few days that pass that I don’t thank God for pulling me from the mud and mire, setting my feet on a rock and giving me a new song in my mouth. The old song wouldn’t work, nor would the details of the hardship. I needed a new song to sing to honor the incredible work God did in my heart. Just as with any other song, its pointless to have unless its actually sung out! If Jesus is your savior God has given you a song to sing just like He did with me. He has also set each of us on a rock to proclaim that song out to give Him glory and to speak to those who surround us in life. Don’t let the fear of a shaky voice stop you from sharing the testimony God has given you and don’t let the routine of everyday life hinder you from singing out a grateful chorus.

What are the words in your song and how can you sing them out this week?

  1. I love this devotional. There are things that I’m currently going through that I can relate to as being a great hardship. I want God to heal me and get me from point A to B instantaneously. I’ve already caught on that God does not work that way. Instead, I’m holding on to the promises in his word. There are certain things I read about in the bible that gives me hope and, although I may not carry happiness in my heart, I carry joy.

    Restore our fortunes, O Lord, like streams in the Negeb! Those who sow in tears shall reap with shouts of joy! He who goes out weeping, bearing the seed for sowing, shall come home with shouts of joy, bringing his sheaves with him. (Psalm 126:4-6, ESV)

    This has been a song that has been in my heart currently.
