Carols Devotional: “It’s About Light”

Christmas: It’s about light

“Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, ‘I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.’” (John 8:12)

One of our favorite things to do at Christmas time is drive through the neighborhoods searching for Christmas lights.  One year we stumbled upon an entire street that had coordinated their decorations. Bekah “ohh-ed” and “ahh-ed” as we slowly drove down the street, but all I could think about was how much their energy bills had to be!

In Luke 2 we read the story of a man named Simeon who had been searching for the best light show, too. One day the Holy Spirit led him to the temple where he met Mary, Joseph, and baby Jesus. He immediately knew he had stumbled upon the brightest light in all creation.

Simeon stood in awe of Jesus. “He took the child in his arms and praised God, saying, ‘Sovereign Lord, now let your servant die in peace, as you have promised. I have seen your salvation, which you have prepared for all people. He is a light to reveal God to the nations.’” (Luke 2:28-32)

Jesus is the light of the world and He reveals the Father to us. So often we chase after other things that look bright or appear to shine, but Jesus is the true light. The light that leads to life!

Are you still searching for the best light show in town? Are you chasing after things besides Jesus hoping they will give you hope or life? As we celebrate Christmas this year, you can stop your search – Jesus is the brightest light of all. The light that leads to life!
