Christmas: It’s about the Hero
“Praise the Lord, the God of Israel, because he has visited and redeemed his people. He has sent us a mighty Savior from the royal line of his servant David, just as he promised through holy prophets long ago.” (Luke 2:68-70)
Christmas seems like a lot of memorable things. It seems like the image of Christmas trees, Christmas lights, Christmas gifts, and the sound of familiar Christmas carols. But all of these symbols are attractive accessories to the main thing.
The authentic heart of Christmas came at the moment our hero arrived on the scene. The mighty Savior came to visit and redeem His people. The rescue mission was put into motion by a little baby in Bethlehem.
This holiday season we celebrate as those redeemed, but too often we forget the weight and significance of our rescue. Maybe that’s why it’s important to ornament the season with accessories that demand immediate attention: lights that blaze in darkness, wreaths that hang on every door frame, trees that stand as sentries in our living rooms. Christmas decorations are magnificent because they remind us of the bigger story, the brighter light, and the valiant hero that brought salvation to our living rooms. We decorate so we don’t forget about our hero.
Let’s use the seasonal accessories to remind us of this one unforgettable thing: A king intervened in darkness to purchase our birthright as children of the light. Praise the Lord, the God of Israel!!

I love this post. For years my family has a tradition where we all take down the Christmas boxes and start to decorate the house. I’ve never been so sensitive to Jesus and this amazing holiday where we celebrate the arrival of our King. It’s beautiful and now has a significant meaning every time I go and prepare the nativity box set and setting up the lights as we all listen to Christmas tunes.
Wow, this is amazing Bekah! I was just talking to someone the other day about the things we do for Christmas and was asking about the meaning to it all and why we do certain things, etc. And you pinpointed the things I needed to hear. I love Christmas time more than anything and now, you just brought a new meaning to why we do the things we do. It’s not just going to be me putting up Christmas lights because I love Christmas lights. It’s going to be me putting up Christmas lights to show Jesus’ light in the darkness! *And because they’re beautiful lol. Now there is true meaning to EVERY LITTLE THING, thank you! (:
This is the first Christmas for me where I am really recognizing the real reason for all the celebrating-the birth of our savior! It amazes me how my whole life I have heard the popular Christmas carols and songs but never truly listened to the words or allowed their meaning to sink in. I want this year to be different, I want to appreciate what this hero did for me and those I love. I want it to be all about him and I want to make him a birthday cake!
