Carols Devotional: “O Come All Ye Faithful, Part 3”

Sing in Exultation

“Sing, choirs of angels, sing in exultation; O sing, all ye citizens of heaven above! Glory to God, all glory in the highest; (refrain: O come let us adore Him)”

“Sing, O barren, You who have not borne! Break forth into singing and cry aloud..” Isaiah 54:1

The gift of God, his Son Jesus Christ comes to earth as a babe to deliver the world from the sin that we were born into through Adam. Such an incredible event worthy of our rejoicing. Yet the time period this hymn reflects was one of hardship and trial. King Herod had just issued a decree to kill all the first born male children. Mary and Joseph had traveled to Bethlehem from Nazareth by donkey and now the child is finally here the one that will deliver his people! Just one problem though the Savior is currently a baby, unable to do much delivering at the time. In fact it would be around 30 years before he began his ministry and even then the salvation and deliverance he brought was nothing like the people expected. Yet this hymn beckons us to lift up our voices and sing in exultation regardless of the surrounding information.

Exultation is the act of lively, triumphant, leaping with joy rejoicing as one would do over success or victory. Though those that gathered round Jesus in the manger that night may have not seen what he would accomplish they knew the promise of God over their people. This holiday season maybe you have not yet seen the work of God come to fruition in a certain area of your life. Maybe there are parts of your life that feel barren and are causing anxiousness and impatience. Stand on the promises of God and more than anything though I urge you wherever you are this season break forth into singing. Sing songs of exultation, songs of triumph to our Savior and let your faith and hope be strengthened.
