Refill Devotional, Week 5 Day 1: “Awe”

Refill with worship: AWE

“Since we are receiving a Kingdom that is unshakable, let us be thankful and please God by worshiping him with holy fear and awe. For our God is a devouring fire.” Hebrews 12:28-29 (NLT)

Worship was never designed to be a mindless habit. When we worship, we stand on holy ground in the very presence of the great I AM.

The outward expression of clapping or raising hands means nothing unless it directly reflects our inward reverence and adoration. True wonder and worship is birthed from recognizing our smallness in the context of His largeness.

The best way to wake up a lukewarm praise habit is to meditate on the One you are worshipping: The Creator of the Universe. The Great I AM. The crafter of every story, stager of every redemption, author and perfecter of our faith. He is the gravitational source of all love, all power and all authority.

He has kept track of every detail in all creation for all of time, and yet he knows you specifically, completely, easily.

He reigns.

If we could grasp only a splinter of the greatness of God, we would have no other choice but to stand overcome by awe and wonder. Jerry Bridges defines worship as “the specific act of ascribing to God the glory, majesty, honor, and worthiness which are His.”

Does our worship relay our wonder? Or have we forgotten the greatness and largeness of our God? How can you meditate on his greatness today?
