The Majority

Things would be so much better if I had…
Only if I had more time I could…
With that I’d be able to…
More money would allow me to…

More is better! This is what we’ve come to believe. No longer is this just a suggestion attached to every single sales pitch known to man. “More is better” has latched itself onto our emotions, its role is vital in our train of thought, and the idea is often looked upon as the answer to our problems. However, at some point we have to ask ourselves whether more will ever be enough…

As a result of serving a God with a greater understanding than my own, I am learning that close to nothing, is as good as everything. I know, confusing right?!

This was displayed in an awesome way in Judges chapters 6 & 7 as Gideon led a handful of Israelites against an army of people that had oppressed them for 7 years. They started off with about 32,000 men with swords and bad attitudes; but after a few conversations with God, the Israelites became the size of a community group in comparison. All before they were told to swap those swords for trumpets and torches in small jars. Oh yea, and they defeated their former oppressors.

More is better huh?

In the eyes of us all, this makes absolutely no sense. I think I can relate to most, as my initial concern was how Israel defeated the Midianites with so little. Yet, I think the “why” of this situation deserves more attention. Why did God want them to fight at such a significant disadvantage?

The answer is a resounding, His glory! God has a tendency to use what is weak or broken to put His awesome power on display. God literally told the Israelites that their initial 32,000 was too great, and that He wanted to receive every ounce credit for their success against the Midianites. Their obedience resulted in a miracle that very likely shocked the Israelites more than anyone else. It’s when we find ourselves jockeying for that same glory that we end up pursuing more in order to compensate for our extreme lack.

What greatness is God attempting to do in you? Where does God want you to be close to nothing so that He can be everything?

YOU + GOD = THE MAJORITY!!!
